The History of Hoagland Pharmacy: Michael Hoagland, owner of Hoagland Pharmacy, graduated in 1970 from the University of Washington. He moved to Bellingham in the fall of 1971 and was married to Rosa in December of that same year. Hoagland Pharmacy opened on February 2, 1981. The store occupied a 1,000 square foot space. For one year, Mike operated the pharmacy by himself. Business grew and in 1985, he moved to a 2,000 square foot building and added a couple of part-time employees. In 1987, Mike began to expand his practice to compounding medications. To further this endeavor, he took some PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America) classes with a colleague, Ed Mohs. Shortly thereafter, he struck a professional relationship with Peggy Ryan, RN, who was currently involved with Whatcom Hopice. Peggy was familiar with compounding and helped to enlighten other nurses about its importance and necessity in health care. Edward “Ed” Donaghy was hired in 1988. Ed had previously worked at Option Care and had experience with long term care pharmacy. Ed worked for Mike for about a year and convinced Mike to start a new venture…a Hoagland Long Term Care Pharmacy. Due to the distant and impersonal relationship with their pharmacy, the first facility to join Hoagland was Alderwood Care Center in Bellingham. Carol Ann Andrews, administrator, and Mike, formed a new and bonded relationship that still exists today. In January of 2000, Hoagland Pharmacy moved to the corner of Yew Street and Texas Street. This is the current location of our retail and compounding pharmacy, along with our bookkeeping office. October of 2004 brought more expansion to Hoagland Pharmacy. To accommodate the growing needs of our pharmacy business, our long term care pharmacy moved to the Haskell Business Center. In the new location, we package and provide medications for assisted living facilities, correctional facilities, skilled nursing facilities, Hospice, adult family homes, and various other organizations needing customer-specific services and systems. Both of our pharmacies offer specialized medication packaging systems, delivery, billing services, Medicare Part B products and services, wound care, pharmacist consulting, compounding, travel vaccinations, health screenings, diabetic shoes, and much more. With more space to move, our retail pharmacy expanded the compounding lab to include a sterile room for compounding injectable medications. Scriptpro, an automated prescription filling machine was also installed to aid in the fast-paced environment of our retail pharmacy. Hoagland Pharmacy has matured out of necessity for a local and personalized approach to pharmaceutical demands. Many of our customers have traded with Mike Hoagland since the beginning. In this, there is familiarity and security knowing your prescription and over-the-counter needs are met with the highest of standards. Hoagland Pharmacy currently employs 6 Pharmacists, 17 pharmacy technicians, 3 technicians in training, 3 bookkeepers, 5 customer service representatives, 7 pharmacy assistants, and approximately 10 delivery drivers.
